music education, musico-theoretical literature, piano schools, elementary doctrine of music, doctrine of the thorough-bass, Johanna Roth, Kežmarok, Spišská Belá

Manuscript textbooks from the first half of the 19th century are, in our judgment, predominantly non-original works deriving from specific printed models, of whose reception they are documentary evidence. In a number of instances there is also an adaptation of the printed models’ texts. We ascribe to Johanna Roth the authorship of the manuscript Základy nástrojovej hudby (Fundamentals of Instrumental Music), focusing on piano playing (Primæ, Lineæ, Musicæ Instrumenalis) and dating from 1816. In our paper we present a comparison of this textbook with Johann Samuel Beyer’s textbook on singing (Anweisung zur Singe Kunst, 1703). Detailed attention is devoted to the musicogenre characterisation of the works in the textbook’s practical section. To Johanna Roth we ascribe a possible authorship of a textbook of basic doctrine on music and the thoroughbass (Musikalische Frag-Stückh; Haupt-Regel des rechten General-Basses). This work is derived from a work by Daniel Speer (Grund-richtiger Kurtz – Leicht – und Nöthiger jetzt Wohl- vermehrter Unterricht der Musicalischen Kunst, 1697). We present the theme in the context of the development of music education and the diffusion of musico-theoretical writing during the first half of the 19th century in Slovakia.

Svadba a svadobné piesne Slovákov v Starej Pazove.

Kristína Lomen

wedding ceremony, ceremony, wedding songs, ceremonial songs, musicostylistic layer

This article maps the wedding ceremony and its song repertoire in the Stará Pazova locality during two time periods: the first half of the 20th century and the second half of the 20th century, indicating their developmental changes. The author provides a succinct description of the wedding ceremony, considered in its individual phases, and traces the incidence of songs, including the category of wedding ceremony songs. The song repertoire documented in the wedding context was classified in terms of basic typology and musico-stylistic layers. In conclusion, there is an indication of the potential for comparison of the wedding ceremony and wedding ceremony songs with material from the territory of Slovakia, especially from the regions from which inhabitants of Stará Pazova come.

Piesne z repertoáru súčasníkov Evy Studeničovej. K neznámym zápisom Karola Plicku z obce Moravský Svätý Ján.

Miriam Timková

Karol Plicka (1894–1987) documented a song repertoire from the singer Eva Studeničová in the village of Moravský Svätý Ján in the early 1920s. He regarded this woman as an exceptional figure among singers, who transcended the limits of the local culture. This article is devoted to a reconstruction of the records of songs which Plicka acquired from other singers in this village. The song records not only contribute to comparison of song variants and rendition styles but they also reveal the contemporary condition and preservation of traditional singing in the local culture. Based on source criticism, a song repertoire extending to 88 songs from 12 singers was identified. This song material represents a valuable supplement to Plicka’s register of songs from Eva Studeničová and provides an opportunity to compare the exceptional singer with several bearers of the local song tradition.
