European Landscape Convention, landscape quality objective, proposal, analysis, the region of Stredné Považie

The aim of this paper is to present an analysis of changes in three rural landscape qualities. Results of the analysis are schemed to provide an overview of changes that took place in landscape over a certain period to the local population, decision-makers and stakeholders of the particular territory. They should also represent an important source of information for the documents involved with landscape planning. However, first of all, presentation of such results should arouse interest in landscape and encourage the population to greater participation in landscape policy. Moreover, the applied research method itself tried to engage the locals as well. The authors of this paper present the proposal and results of such analysis accomplished in the region of Stredné Považie. The applied procedure consists of the analysis of three partial changes of the rural landscape quality – particularly those of landscape structure, visual quality, and socio-cultural quality.

census, households, regional inequalities, districts, forecast, headship rates, Slovakia

The character and structure of the census households tell much about the social and demographic characteristics of each population. Their structure indicates the virtual atomization of the society and its division into the major family and non-family units. The census is the only data source on households. The study analyses recent changes in structure and regional differentiation of the census households in Slovakia at the level of districts (NUTS-IV) since 1991. The key part of the study is the forecast of the census households with the horizon of 2030 being quite a solitary output of the European forecasting with respect to the regional level. The method of headship rates has been used in making the forecast. In the study, an attempt has been made to postulate the major demographic and geographical factors and determinants of regional inequalities in the census households in the Slovak Republic as they have changed and will change in future.

landscape diversity, land cover changes, Shannon diversity index, Simpson diversity index, town of Svätý Jur

The main objective of this article is the assessment of the dynamics of landscape diversity (LD) changes in the prevailingly viticultural landscape around Svätý Jur town. Landscape diversity (LD) values have been assessed for 66.16 ha of prevailingly viticultural landscape in a part of the Svätý Jur cadastre for the years 1896, 1949 and 2011. The study area was divided into a grid (of 25 m spacing) and LD values were evaluated for all cells for all three years. The Shannon landscape diversity index (SHDI) and Simpson landscape diversity index (SIDI) were applied as LD metrics. The LD values increased during the 1949–2011 period. A gradual shift of areas with high LD value from the northern to the central parts of the study area has been observed. Comparison of the SHDI and SIDI values showed certain differences arising from the mathematical nature of calculations of the two metrics, specifically in terms of classification of the final LD value sets into intervals. The method used appears to be a useful and effective tool for fine-scale identification of landscape attributes and improvement of landscape management.

conception of geography education, geography curriculum, goals of education, key abilities, content of geography teaching

The study is a detailed analysis of some issues in geography education in Slovakia after the year 1989. In relation to this subject, it provides thorough and systematic characteristics of the curriculum in 4 selected time periods. Special attention is paid to the content of the subject, division of thematic units into particular years of study in elementary and grammar schools and the defined requirements in terms of the scope and quality of learners’ knowledge. The presented analysis shows that there have been no substantial changes in the geography curriculum in Slovakia as far as its content and the overall concept are concerned in comparison with various developed countries during the last 30 years. The authors consider unsustainable the preservation of the contemporary conception in geography education considering the fact that it is not able to ensure the development of key abilities for the 21st century which were defined by the international authorities. In the conclusion the authors present their own proposal of a new model of tuition based on the professionally and methodologically worked out educational programmes in the developed countries of the world.

protected area networks (PAN), National Reserve Fund (NRF), primary criteria, percentage, representativeness, connectivity, Ukraine

The article concerns the expansion of protected area networks. Nowadays this is one of the main directions of its development. There are three main questions to be answered: How much area to conserve? Which kind of area to conserve? Where to conserve? They can be solved through three primary criteria: percentage, representativeness, and connectivity. The article reveals the experience of their application to nature conservation and applies them for the Nature Reserve Fund of Ukraine. The conclusion contains the “coarse-filter” guidelines, which will help to localize new protected areas in Ukraine. The framework can be profitably applied to other large-scale regions.
