The paper summarizes part of the results of morphometric georelief analysis with view of geometric relief form classification, which were achieved by J. Krcho and published progressively in this journal. In addition, mathematical relationships for the set of morphometric quantities, as well as classification of geometrical georelief forms and their inner structure are expressed.

Land cover change, landscape change, CORINE, backdating, updating, satellite data, Phare countries

The study documents the basic approaches to identification and land cover/landscape change analysis applied at the Institute of Geography, Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava during the last years. Two basic sets of methods exist by which it is possible to obtain information on landscape changes directly from remote sensing data: visual and computer aided visual interpretation (above all backdating analysis and the method of updating) and digital interpretation methods. The method of computer aided visual interpretation of the Landsat MSS and TM satellite images was applied in the context of the Phare Topic Link on Land Cover and CORINE Land Cover 2000 projects at the Institute of Geography, SAS. Intensification and extensification of agriculture, deforestation, and afforestation were the most distinctly manifested changes in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.

The paper presents a brief survey of the development of hydrogeographic regional typification at the Institute of Geography, SAS. Hydrogeographic regional typification exclusively deals with the identification of hydrologically homogeneous (formal) regional units on the basis of similarity of their physical characteristics. Development of hydrogeographic regional typification during the 1980s at the Institute of Geography, SAS relied on the conventional approaches of typological regionalization of physical geography applied in that time. In the 1990s new approaches to hydrogeographic regionalization were searched for. They applied modern quantitative trends in regionalization and regional typification developed in the framework of geography. Results obtained in connection with the generation of the database of physical characteristics of small basins in Slovakia and hydrogeographic regional typification from the points of view of the long-term annual minimum and maximum runoff, runoff regime, and genetic structure of runoff are presented.

The paper treats technological development in the geographical applications of mobile geoinformation technologies. There are several problems concerning geomorphological mapping in difficult terrain and complicated georelief. The main aim is to specify capabilities of mobile geoinformation technologies, which can be integrated for improving thematic mapping of georelief. While many developments in GPS and mobile GIS have been considered from the viewpoint of geodesy, their versatility in geomorphological research has had limited attention. Both mobile geoinformation technologies are becoming more available, less expensive and easier to integrate with other devices and disciplines. The paper involves a description of procedures for using mobile geoinformation technology within geomorphological mapping. It identifies the advantages of these technologies. The results consist of defining four levels of GPS/GIS integration in geomorphological mapping and their critical assessment.
