On Tuesday 2 April a meeting of PhD students of the Academy and the members of the Presidium of the SAS took place at the SAS Auditorium. A similar meeting is planned on Friday 5 April at 9:00 at the auditorium on Watsonova street in Košice for all PhD students from Košice.
In the presence of the members of the Presidium of the SAS for Sections 1 and 3 Martin Venhart and Róbert Karula, Ľubica Lacinová presented options for the support and provision of doctoral studies at the SAS institutes. She outlined the philosophy of the cooperation between the SAS and selected Slovak universities and she elaborated on the matter of funding for the doctoral studies. She mentioned the option to use the SAS website which provides enough information. For example, about subsidized competitions for young scientists. She paid special attention to grants for PhD students. At the turn of May or beginning of June, the SAS will issue a call for grant applications and after the evaluation of the applications, it will award thirty grants, €2,000 each, at the end of the year. In this context, there was a discussion about the time limit to draw grant funds and the implementation of grants, which are currently only available to first- and second-year PhD students due to balancing of the books at the end of a fiscal year. SAS considers doctoral studies and the training of young scientist to be one of its priorities. In 2018, the SAS sections had 480 PhD students altogether, 430 full time and 50 external.
