POTENCIÁLNE ČLENSTVO SLOVINSKA V EURÓPSKEJ ÚNII A PERSPEKTÍVA JEHO PRIESTOROVÉHO ROZVOJA

A. Pogačnik: Potential membership of Slovenia in the European Union: its spatial development perspective. Geografický časopis, 54, 2002, 2, 6 figs., 16 refs.

This paper summarizes the research done by the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia for the Slovenian Ministry of Environment and Planning. Its aim is to show the possibilities and dangers regarding Slovene membership in the European Union in the field of spatial development. The main goals and proposals are: urban networking, urban and traffic corridors, sustainable farming and tourism, new industrial sites, protection of nature and the ecological corridors. The co-operation with the neighbouring countries – Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary – has been proposed together with the response to the challenge of the competiting cities of Trieste, Gorizia, Zagreb, Rijeka and Graz.

Key words: urban networking, traffic corridors, sustainable farming and tourism, industrial site, nature protection, ecological corridors, European Union, Slovenia

NIEKTORÉ NOVÉ ASPEKTY DIVERZITY BIOSFÉRY

P. Plesník: Some new aspects of diversity of the biosphere. Geografický časopis, 54, 2002, 2, 18 refs.

The paper is devoted to the issue of the different effects of oceanity, continentality, and the sea level altitude as the basic factors influencing the spatial distribution of vegetation and animal life. Applying the principle of global view of the biosphere, the overall biodiversity of dry land with special attention to the effect of mountain ranges together with the effect of oceans as the agent moderating the cold during the glacial periods are addressed. The consequences of global changes of atmosphere on the oceanic and dry land organisms, particularly the greenhouse effect, are also analyzed.

Key words: oceanity, continentality, biosphere, diversity, paleoendemism, greenhouse effect

DIVERZITA KRAJINY SLOVENSKA

J. Oťaheľ, J. Feranec, N. Machková: Landscape diversity of Slovakia. Geografický časopis, 54, 2002, 2, 12 figs., 2 tabs., 30 refs.

The aim of study is to present the landscape structure of Slovakia from the point of view of its spatial diversity and to show the approaches to its evaluation. The authors used the CORINE land cover data, Shannon index (taken over from the theory of information), districts, territorial technical units (UTJ), and spatial units of the ten-kilometer and five hundred-meter networks for the calculation of landscape diversity. The highest values of landscape diversity (3.3-5.5) were identified in basins, furrows, promontories and plateaus of Slovakia as the consequence of differentiation of natural (relief, soil, and bioclimatic) conditions and simultaneously settlement concentration and the associated economic, as well as social activities. The lowland districts and UTJ of Slovakia are characterized by very low values of landscape diversity in the consequence of one prevailing land cover class – arable land.

Key words: landscape diversity, landscape equitability, land cover, Shannon index, Slovakia

TYPY RIEČNEHO PIRÁTSTVA VO VULKANICKÝCH POHORIACH SLOVENSKÝCH KARPÁT

J. Lacika: Types of river piracy in the volcanic mountains ranges of the Slovak Carpathians. Geografický časopis, 54, 2002, 2, 6 figs., 23 refs.

The aim of the study is to analyze the conditions for river piracy in the Slovak Carpathians and to typify the phenomenon of river piracy in volcanic mountain ranges. Identified types of piracy are illustrated by four localities: Chrámec, Petrovce, Šavol, and Hrochoť, while each of them represents a different type: ”T” type, ”K” type, ”Y” type, and ”I” type. They differ by composition of valleys and ridges, nature of erosive processes, and the factors, which cause piracy. Chronological aspect of the researched phenomenon is also addressed. Four developmental stages of participation of piracy in the relief-forming process are specified. The first stage is the piracy only as potential and it concerns the territories with possible early occurrence of piracy. The second to fourth stages comprise piracy as real category. Extent of piracy in its second developmental stage is local, in the third stage it comprises larger territory, and in the fourth developmental stage the massive and multiply piracy results in almost complete transformation of the network of valleys and ridges.

Key words: valley piracy, typification, valley network, the Slovak Carpathians

PODMIEŇUJÚCE FAKTORY PRI IDENTIFIKÁCII GEOMORFOLOGICKÝCH REGIÓNOV NA PRÍKLADE KONTAKTNÉHO ÚZEMIA JUHOSLOVENSKEJ KOTLINY A REVÚCKEJ VRCHOVINY

Z. Bárdoš: Determining identifying factors of geomorphological regions on example of contact territory of the South Slovakian Basin and the Revúca Upland. Geografický časopis, 54, 2002, 2, 4 figs., 1 tab., 22 refs.

The paper presents characteristics of regional geomorphological differentiation of the selected territory in the contact part of the South Slovakian Basin and the Revúca Upland. The detailed field research and mapping of the territory proved that apart from the traditional geomorphological (morphometric, morphographic and genetic) parameters also other factors influence the relief regionalization. They include the spatial relations of neighbourhood, areas of regions, contrast and length of borders. The study offers the new view of relief differentiation where the key role is played by objective laws expressing similarity of spatial relations in landscape. The contribution of this study lies in the preference of research of linkages between the forms to characteristics of its content.

Key words: relief differentiation, geomorphological regionalization, elementary forms, geomorphological regions, South Slovakian Basin, Revúca Upland
