POROVNÁVACIA ANALÝZA KRASOVÝCH PLANÍN ZÁPADNÝCH KARPÁT

J. Jakál: Comparative analysis of karst plateaux in the Western Carpathians. Geografický časopis, 53, 2001, 1, 8 figs., 1 tab., 50 refs.

The study deals with comparative analysis of the karst relief of the plateau type in the Western Carpathians. Firstly, it identifies the common features of the geological building and tectonic development of geomorphic wholes of the Slovak Karst, the Slovenský raj (Mts.), Muráň plateau, and a part of the Hnilec Hills. Then it assesses the degree of its karstification relying on the thickness and the typological scale of the karst and fluviokarst relief forms. Finally, the study presents the development of opinion and suggests genesis of karstification process from the Upper Cretaceous as evidenced by the filling of the karst hollows, and also emphasizes the stage of karstification, which occurred after the neotectonic uplifting and dissection of the plateau into a system of karst plateaux.

Key words: karst plateaux, comparative analysis, Western Carpathians

HYDROGEOGRAFICKÉ REGIONÁLNE TYPY DLHODOBÉHO PRIEMERNÉHO ROČNÉHO ODTOKU NA SLOVENSKU

Ľ. Solín, T. Cebecauer: Hydrogeographic regional types of the long-term mean annual runoff in Slovakia. Geografický časopis, 53, 2001, 1, 17 figs., 7 tabs., 34 refs.

The aim of the paper is to present a more detailed identification of hydrogeographic regional types of the mean annual runoff from the points of view of their number and spatial delimitation. The decisive impulse for this research has been the creation of digital network of small basins in Slovakia, which fulfil the function of classified objects, and creation of an extensive database of their physical characteristics in the GIS environment. Hydrogeographic regional types are identified on the basis of physiographic basin characteristics by the method of logic division while they should fulfil the condition of inner homogeneity and mutual heterogeneity from the viewpoint of the mean annual runoff. Inner hydrological homogeneity and the mutual hydrological heterogeneity of physical regional types was tested by methods of inductive statistics.

Key words: mean annual runoff, hydrogeographic regional type, testing of hydrological homogeneity and heterogeneity, map of hydrogeographic regional types

K VŠEOBECNÝM ZÁSADÁM TVORBY MÁP

J. Pravda: Contribution to the general principles of map creation. Geografický časopis, 53, 2001, 1, 1 fig., 19 refs.

Information about existence of nine general principles of creation of thematic maps: principle of unity, selection, coordination, generalization, scale, spatial representation, emphasis on dominants, simplicity, and comprehensibility, has spread in cartographic literature. In this paper six reservations are quoted and the fact that four most general principles, namely principle of cartographic projection, cartographic generalization, scale and graphic (map) way of expressing have already been formulated, is emphasized.

Key words: principles of map creation, semiotics, logic, principles of projection, scale, generalization and map interpretation

OBRAZ RAKÚSKA A SLOVENSKA U OBYVATEĽOV SLOVENSKO-RAKÚSKEHO POHRANIČIA

D. Kollár: Image of Austria and Slovakia viewed by the inhabitants of the Slovak-Austrian boundary area. Geografický časopis, 53, 2001, 1, 1 fig., 6 tabs., 24 refs.

The aim of the study is to show the degree of justification of research into the ideas and feelings of an individual connected with associations and image of the neighbouring countries and selected indicators of spatial behaviour. The image and perception of the neighbouring country play an important role in formation of the relation of population living in the boundary area to the neighbouring country, as well as in potential initiation of cross-border co-operation. The aim of the study is also to enlighten the individual aspects of perception of image of the neighbouring country. The image of the neighbouring country is presented as a dependent variable, explanation of which relies on man’s movement across the border, social cross-border contacts, reception of media information from the neighbouring country, knowledge of language of the neighbouring country and socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents.

Key words: image of country, spatial images and feelings, spontaneous associations, spatial behaviour, cross-border activity and co-operation

STAV ROZPRACOVANOSTI PROBLEMATIKY INDIKÁTOROV TRVALO UDRŽATEĽNÉHO ROZVOJA

M. Huba: State of the art of sustainable development indicators issue. Geografický časopis, 53, 2001, 1, 33 refs.

In this paper the contemporary state of the research in the topic of sustainable development indicators is analyzed. A research boom in this field has been provoked by social demands and accelerated by the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992. It is a challenge not only for planners, decision-makers, educators etc., but also for scientists, including geographers. It is evident that geography can contribute significantly to the discussion on sustainability indicator issues, especially through the introduction of temporal and spatial aspects, integration of environmental, social and economic dimensions of development, as well as through complex, holistic and/or synthetical approaches. Geographically relevant are, first of all, these investigations in relation to both single activities (energetics, water management, agriculture, tourism, etc.) and all-societal activities (e.g. National strategies of sustainable development), including production and consumption patterns and value orientations of the population.

Key words: sustainability, indicators, functions, categories, aggregation, limitations, sets and/or examples of sustainability indicators
