Identification and measurement of regional disparities (RD) are decisive factors in the search for solutions to perceived regional inequality. The selection of correct and relevant indicators has a key role in the identification and measurement of RD. The aim of this paper is to present the knowledge concerning the identification and measurement of RD with emphasis on the broader theoretical and systemic foundations for the selection of indicators. A wide range of the most important and most often used RD assessment indicators based on a basic systemic classification of regional disparities will also be presented. Relevant indicators of a socio-economic nature are classified on the basis of results of meta-analysis of more than fifty reliable studies of the issue in question accompanied by their definitions and brief characteristics. Advantages, drawbacks, nuances and specific features are presented by mean of a general analysis of their different aspects.
