On nil-algebras and an invariant of fields

About 30 years ago T. J. Laffey defined a field invariant and connected it with the existence of large commutative subalgebras of nil-algebras over fields. In this note we are going to compare the invariant of Laffey with the well known u-invariant. We are also going to extend his result on nil-algebras over fields to the case of nil-algebras over arbitrary commutative, unital ring.
