This study concerns the interrelation between the town and the sea in the two specific cases of La Spezia and Livorno. The aim of this work is to verify whether the two towns can really be identified as SEA CITTES (towns which, for physical, historical, cultural and economic reasons, forms a single unit with the sea) rather than simply CITIES BY THE SEA (towns which do not enjoy a strong interrelationship with the sea itself).
