The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), Comenius University in Bratislava (UK) and the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (STU) concluded a memorandum of cooperation in science at the Comenius University in Bratislava on Monday. The memorandum was signed by UK Rector Marek Števček, STU Rector Miroslav Fikar and SAS President, Pavol Šajgalík.

The aim of the signed agreement is to create top science that is competitive at a global level. The two strongest universities and academies of science will create a scientific cluster to improve the provision of higher education and contribute to the development of science, education and culture of society.
The mission of this scientific cluster will be in particular to raise the national and international profile of institutions and to obtain exceptionally high-quality students, scientists, professionals, and investment. This activity will be coordinated so that top science is achieved at a global level to support the societal, economic, cultural and environmental welfare and prosperity of the country, "said UK rector Marek Števček

Most of the scientific profile in Slovakia is made up mostly of SAS, UK and STU staff. Their scientists produce more than 55% of all scientific publications registered in the Web of Science database from all institutions in Slovakia. " 70% of the total Slovak production is in scientific publications," Števček added. SAS President Pavol Šajgalík recalled the period when competition was prevalent among institutions. However, it has now resulted in concrete cooperation, which is also intended to prevent the outflow of students abroad and help to create top scientific workplaces together. (TASR)
