Nobel Prize winner coming to SAS

Added by: S. Ščepán, 10.4.2019, 555 visit

At the end of April, there will be a double opportunity to meet
German scientist, winner of the prestigious Nobel Prize, Klaus von Klitzing in Bratislava. On Monday, April 29, there will be a lecture at 4 pm at the Magna hall of the Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies of the Slovak University of Technology on Ilkovičova 2: From Nobel Prize to New Kilogram. One day later, at 10 am on April 30, he will meet with leading SAS scientists at the SAS Congress Center on Štefánikova 3.

Professor Klaus von Kitzing is a German physicist known for the discovery of the integer quantum Hall effect, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1985. Since that year he has been running the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany. His research is currently focusing on the properties of low-dimensional electronic systems, particularly at low temperatures and high magnetic fields.

The quantum Hall effect plays a key role in the introduction of the new SI system. It can be used not only for high-precision measurement of electrical standards, but also for the re-determination of kilograms by comparing electrical and mechanical forces using watt balances (an extremely accurate weight measuring instrument). His lecture on April 29 summarizes the use of the quantum Hall effect in metrology, focusing on replacing the kilogram with a fixed Planck constant.

Entry to the April 29 lecture is free. However, due to limited capacity, attendees will need to register at https://uniba.sk/klitzing. Slovak translation will be provided.

On Tuesday, April 30, invited guests will attend a personal meeting with Prof. Klaus von Kitzing, each accompanied by a talented young scientist 35 years of age and younger. The topic of this meeting is: Major aspects to succeed in scientific research. The meeting will be held under the auspices of Prof. Pavel Šajgalík, SAS President, who will also present a short report on the biggest challenges in Slovak science.

The organizers of the two-day visit of prof. Klaus von Kitzing in Slovakia are: Petit Academy, Nadace Tatra banky, STU Bratislava, UK Bratislava and SOVVA. / r /
