It is with great sorrow that the SAS Institute of Zoology announces that our colleague, RNDr.Ferdinand Šporka, DrSc. (* 3 .12.1951 - † 6. 02 2019), has passed away at the age of 67. Despite his failing health over the last few weeks, he was still keenly interested in the operation of his department and in current affairs at the IZ SAS.
RNDr. Ferdinand Šporka, DrSc., was a native of Bratislava. From 1975 to 1990 he was employed at the Institute of Fisheries and Hydrobiology in Bratislava. Following the establishment of the SAS Institute of Zoology and Ecosociology, he became Head of the Institute of Hydrobiology in June 1991 and held this position until 2008, when the SAS Institute of Zoology was reorganized. In 2016 he became the head of the section (and later the Department) of Animal Ecology.
He was actively involved in the implementation of international projects, coordinating four projects of the EU Framework Program as a researcher. He was also responsible for several VEGA projects and coordinated the revitalization projects of Hrona and Moravia in cooperation with the Water Research Institute (WRI) Bratislava and partner organizations in Austria. In his work, he focused mainly on zoobenthos research, ecology of flood waters, mountain lakes and streams, and on the impact of global climate change on macrozoobenthos. He is the author of more than 140 original scientific works in domestic and foreign journals and monographs.
