Minister of Education visited SAS

On Friday, the eighth of April 2016 Slovak Academy of Sciences was visited by the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport Peter Plavčan. It was his first meeting with members of the Presidium of SAS as a Minister, building on his previous negotiations during his position as a head of the Office of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport.

He underlined that he is considering SAS as a bastion of science in Slovakia, welcomed foreign accreditation process of the SAS and supported the transition process of SAS organizations to public research institutions. “We will do all legal steps to ensure that the law will be promptly passed,“ said Minister Peter Plavčan. Both sides agreed on the need to support competition in science and excellent research teams.


Communiqué of the working visit of the Minister Peter Plavčan in SAS:

Presidium of SAS and Minister declared mutual support in activities leading to better research efficiency in SAS, leading to better linking of scientific knowledge on the needs of the practice and to greater visibility of SAS offices in the European Research Area.

Members of the Presidium of the Academy informed the Minister about updates in a long-term plan for the development of SAS until 2020, in which as the top priority remains the transformation of the organizations to the public research institutions. Minister who was professionally covering this aim in a previous job position and who has the preparation of these legislative standards in the sphere of competence reaffirmed his support for this and other purposes.

He clearly declared that the development of the science system in the Slovak Republic and especially in the Slovak Academy remains as his priority. In his opinion, it is necessary to integrate and concentrate science and research, on the key issues and link it to the field of education and economic practice with more effectivity.

In order to that, the Minister will also support other projects of SAS which will be launched in 2016 such as the accreditation by panel of foreign expert, SASPRO programs and „Open College“, preparation of joint research centers and laboratories with universities, support for transfer of knowledge into practice centers, „networking” of research capacities of social sciences and humanities to tackle global civilization challenges, and more.

Presidium of the SAS and the Minister agreed on the need for a significant strengthening of the share of competitive funding for science and research in Slovakia and creating a system of programs and facilities for keeping young talented graduate students as well as on other future joint actions in favor of the fulfillment of these goals. At the end of the meeting, the Minister and the President of SAS answered the questions of invited journalists.
