The meeting between representatives of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Research institutions in Turkey (TÜBİTAK) was held in the Congress Centre of SAS in Smolenice on 16th-18th March. The aim of the meeting was to enhance the cooperation, which has been running already for more than ten years. It resulted in the signing of a Joint Statement of cooperation in new areas of science and research.

Thursday, March 17 was the key day of three-day event, during which representatives of both institutions presented their research and participated in a workshop. Workshop aimed at enhancing years of cooperation with a goal to support the research of both countries.

Vice-President of SAS for research RNDr. Eva Majková, DrSc. opened the meeting with expressing her condolences to Turkish representatives over the terrorist attack which happened on Sunday in Ankara.
Cooperation between SAS and TÜBİTAK has been focused so far on material sciences, but after workshop, common science topics should be enhanced. „So far the interest from the Turkisch side has been mainly focused on materials science, but this year, the cooperation extends to genetics, biotechnology and research in the field of food security,” said Eva Majková. The partnership is likely to develop also in the field of nuclear energy. „It's not a dominant area of research on SAS, but in the context of cooperation with The Nuclear Power Plant Research Institute (VUJE) in Trnava, some cooperation can arise,” added Vice-President of SAS for research.

Representatives of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Research institutions in Turkey also signed the Joint Statemnet to establish the basic framework of the partnership. „We have accomplished a number of joint projects and we hope that we have much more of them ahead,” commented on the cooperation of the institutions Vice President of TUBITAK Dr. Orkun Hasekioğlu.
