Leaders of V4 Academies of sciences in Brussels

On the first of March President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences prof. Pavol Šajgalík and Vice President of SAS for research RNDr. Eva Majková DrSc. met with the presidents of academies of the Visegrad Group countries and with representatives of the European Commission in Brusel. The aim of the meeting was to present the trim of the academies to increase the participation on European research as well as present the new research infrastructure equipment on academies.
Meeting was attended by the President of the ASCR Jiří Drahoš, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Arts László Lovász and President of the Polish Academy of Sciences Jerzy Duszyński. Slovak Academy of Sciences was represented by the President Prof. Pavol Šajgalík and Vice President for research RNDr. Eva Majková DrSc.
The Presidents of academies met in Brussels with the Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas. They discuss the role of science in creation of national and European policies and presented their readiness to provide their expertise in this process.
They also informed about the new research infrastructure on academies in the V4 countries that has been built from the Structural Funds. Discussion also focused on the sustainability of the infrastructure, especially in the context of lower national budgets for research. Participants agreed on the need for higher involvement of academies in the European research area and also highlighted the role of science diplomacy.



During the meeting with Commissioner Tibor Navracsics, who is responsible for the area of education, culture, sports and youth, participants discussed issues of education PhD. students, lifelong learning and other opportunities offered by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Tibor Navracsics also pointed out the ability to carry out an evaluation of higher education in each country provided by the OECD. The opportunity to organize an event Science meets Parliament in the V4 countries was also discussed.
At the meeting with the President of the European Research Council, Jean-Pierre Bourguignon presidents discussed mostly the success rate of the V4 academies in obtaining prestigious ERC grants. In this area, the V4 countries are far behind the old EU members. Actions, which should be taken by individual institutions to increase the participation in these projects, were also part of the debate.
In the evening a conference Visegrad 4 Academy of Sciences - your partners in European research, development and innovation cooperation was held in the Permanent representation of ČR in EU. Each Academy of Sciences was presented on the conference, and thereafter in the panel discussion the role of academies of science as research organizations in the European research area was presented as well.
