The Future is Science - Science is the Future

In May last year, the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) adopted the "Long-Term Development Intentions of the SAS - SAS 2020". We will implement this plan, which is a conception of development with defined strategic, medium-term and operational objectives, in a systematic and progressive stages, such as the transformational process which SAS institutes are currently undergoing to become public research institutes, the provision of stable financing, accreditation to foreign panels of experts and a strengthening of performance-related pay. In accordance with operational objectives, the SAS has recently drawn up nine research programmes, reacting to the needs of society, particularly of the Slovak Republic. The SAS is adopting and implementing these steps in a difficult period, when the whole of society, in open discussions, is becoming more and more aware of the importance of education, the school system and science for the immediate future of the country.
Therefore, the SAS 2020 plan has the motto: "Science is the future". That is a truth proven by history. However, it can come true only if the conditions for education, training and research work are secured by the permanent and continuous support of all who bear responsibility for their development in the state.
The Presidium of the SAS regards it as its moral responsibility to stress that the social status, credit and honour given to a scientific worker - a person engaged in scientific and research work - are equally vital for the future development and good of society as the status of a teacher - a person involved in education or the school system in general. People who work in education and science together form irreplaceable creative potential, and the future of the country and its citizens depends on supporting them. These days it is no longer necessary specifically to prove that education and science especially are, in the 21st century, a crucial source of value creation on which the prospects of every competitive society is built.
We are convinced that all those who are authorized to decide on the future of our country should bear in mind that this future is built on science, and that therefore - SCIENCE IS THE FUTURE!
