The New Centre for Applied Research

The premises of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, Dúbravská Road, welcomed its new Centre for Applied Research of New Materials and Technology Transfer on 11 December with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new Centre was officially opened by the representatives of the SAS along with Prof. Peter Plavčan, the General Director of Higher Education, Science and Research at the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic.

The President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Prof. Pavol Šajgalík, pointed out the importance of the new Centre for the SAS as well as for the whole scientific community. In terms of technology transfer, he also emphasized its importance for the whole industry. In the presence of Prof. Jaromír Pastorek, the SR Government Plenipotentiary for Research and Innovation, Juraj Lapin, who is a member of the Presidium of the SAS as well as the main project coordinator, appreciated the successful completion of the new Centre in accordance with the schedule. He also praised the centre being equipped with the latest technology which was also done within schedule. Juraj Lapin declared the opening of the Centre to be a crucial event in the development of the SAS. The Centre was built in the Pavilion for Material Sciences at a cost of 24,998,953 Euros. It was money drawn from EU funds within the framework of the Operational Programme Research and Development for Innovations. It consists of five high-tech laboratories which are equipped with state-of-the-art devices There is a Laboratory of Ceramic Materials, a Laboratory of Materials for Electrical Engineering, a Laboratory of Metallic Materials, a Laboratory of Exploitation of Nanomaterials and a Laboratory of Structural Analysis of Materials. In addition, a Technology Transfer Office forms part of the Centre. It focuses on appraisal of inventions and technologies in terms of their possible patenting as well as patenting of inventions, licensing of patented inventions and common marketing of the organisations of the SAS in foreign countries.

The mission of the Centre for Applied Research is to conduct excellent exploratory research focused on key areas of economic and social development of the Slovak Republic. In addition, the Centre has as its mission to conduct applied research which employs application-oriented methodologies. The research focuses on ultra-lightweight structural (metallic) materials, high temperature materials and materials for extreme environments (ceramic materials), composite materials, nanomaterials and materials for electrical engineering.
