Cooperation with Taiwan

On Friday the 25th January 2008 Jonathan Shieh, the Director of the Science and Technology Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office visited the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Jonathan Shieh was welcomed by Prof. Ján Slezák, the First Vice-President of SAS, Elena Gramatová the Deputy of Scientific Secretary of SAS, Ján Barančík, the Head of SAS Department of International Cooperation and other SAS representatives.

At the beginning Ján Barančík informed the Taiwanese guest about the present cooperation between SAS and NSC. He mentioned that in the period 2004-2007 4 researchers from SAS institutes visited Taiwan in frame of the above mentioned agreement, and in the same period 2 Taiwanese scientists visited the SAS. In addition to this he gave a short presentation about the present bilateral and multilateral cooperation of the SAS with its partners abroad.

Jonathan Shieh informed the SAS representatives, that the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office has been established in Prague in order to promote and intensify the scientific cooperation with the Central- and East-European countries. The activities of the Office are covering the V-4 countries, as well as Ukraine, Slovenia, Rumania and Bulgaria. Taiwan offers short-term and long-term stays for foreign senior researchers and Ph.D. students on several Taiwanese universities.

The participants of the Meeting have agreed that the cooperation between SAS and NSC must be intensified. The first step towards that will be the presentation of informations about the scholarships and scientific exchange stays in the partner country both on the SAS and NSC website on the base of free excess to documents published there. Jonathan Shieh informed the SAS representatives about the intention of his Office to prepare a visit of the representatives of NSC in combination with Taiwanese experts from several fields of science in the current year. The purpose of this visit will be to discuss and set the new principles of the cooperation between SAS and NSC, as well as to enable the Taiwanese experts to establish direct contacts with the prospective partner institutions belonging to the structure of SAS.
