About article:
In this paper the contemporary state of the research in the topic of sustainable development indicators is analyzed. A research boom in this field has been provoked by social demands and accelerated by the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992. It is a challenge not only for planners, decision-makers, educators etc., but also for scientists, including geographers. It is evident that geography can contribute significantly to the discussion on sustainability indicator issues, especially through the introduction of temporal and spatial aspects, integration of environmental, social and economic dimensions of development, as well as through complex, holistic and/or synthetical approaches. Geographically relevant are, first of all, these investigations in relation to both single activities (energetics, water management, agriculture, tourism, etc.) and all-societal activities (e.g. National strategies of sustainable development), including production and consumption patterns and value orientations of the population.
