On the state of the AES and cryptographic hashing

The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is an elegant and popular block cipher. In this short summary we provide an overview of the state of cryptanalysis for this important primitive. We will also consider the problems surrounding some widely-used hash functions and we note the potential role of the AES as the basis for a hash function.
