In this study different interpretations of cartogram, as the cartographic method used for expression of relative indices, are examined. It is not the same if cartogram is used to represent shares of the area surface (data relating to the surface of any area – district, region or state) or whether it is used to express shares of other nature (for instance number of unemployed of the total number of economically active population). Concepts of the area and diagram cartograms are defined and three causes of incorrect application of the area cartogram are explained in detail.
