The article deals with the development of motorways build-up in Slovakia since the beginning of their build-up in 1969 up to this time, giving it in the context with motorways build-up in the ČSFR. Emphasis is laid on the influence of significant factors on the development of motorway network, namely an economic development, Increasing degree of motorization as well as the International and transit traffic. The direction of and drawing motorway lines are influenced to a deciding degree by big towns, industrial centres and areas with tourist traffic. The significance of entries and exits from the motorways are pointed out. The increasing intensity of traffic on the motorways points out their significance in the transport system and in economy at all.
