About article:
The study is a detailed analysis of some issues in geography education in Slovakia after the year 1989. In relation to this subject, it provides thorough and systematic characteristics of the curriculum in 4 selected time periods. Special attention is paid to the content of the subject, division of thematic units into particular years of study in elementary and grammar schools and the defined requirements in terms of the scope and quality of learners’ knowledge. The presented analysis shows that there have been no substantial changes in the geography curriculum in Slovakia as far as its content and the overall concept are concerned in comparison with various developed countries during the last 30 years. The authors consider unsustainable the preservation of the contemporary conception in geography education considering the fact that it is not able to ensure the development of key abilities for the 21st century which were defined by the international authorities. In the conclusion the authors present their own proposal of a new model of tuition based on the professionally and methodologically worked out educational programmes in the developed countries of the world.
