The Institute for Research in Social Communication at SAS was established in 1990 as the Department for Research in Social and Biological Communication at SAS. At the Institute we perform basic interdisciplinary research, focusing on the complex relationships between social, cultural and psychological aspects of human existence. We identify gaps in our knowledge and then carry out engaged research in areas considered to be societal issues. We analyse societal, political, intergenerational, media and intimate discourses, so social communication is both the object of our research and the methodological framework. Our research also fills in the gaps in scientific knowledge, particularly in the field of social psychology, but also in other psychological sciences as well as education and philosophy.

The Institute’s value lies in:

- its transdisciplinary and critical approach to social science research
- its intercultural comparative framework
- its focus on education

The integrating theme of the research performed at the Institute, supported by the Centre for Research in Education and the Institute’s doctoral programme – School Education – is societal challenges for education – human education and development in both its formal and informal frames. It is the Institute’s flagship research topic.

Our research focuses on the following areas:

- inclusion (in education; of people with disabilities, sexual minorities, ethnic minorities);
- civic participation and deliberation;
- societal values and norms and the politics of education;
- dialogicality of knowledge (literacy, metacognitive regulation);
- transformations in intimacy and parenthood.

At the Institute we also conduct cutting-edge/frontier research in other relevant areas – such as projects in the fields of “society” and technology”.
