The „Geopoetics“ of Bratislava: the Representation of the City in Slovak Literature after 1918 |
„Geopoetika“ Bratislavy: reprezentácie mesta v slovenskej literatúre po roku 1918. |
Program: |
VEGA |
Project leader: |
Mgr. Passia Radoslav Ph.D. |
Annotation: | Literary representations of the city are important culture-forming elements of the urban space. They form its „genius loci“ as a part of the collective memory of the inhabitants. Bratislava has several special features which make it different from thematized metropolitan cities in other cultures. The semiotic position of the city is determined by the particularities of Slovak literature and political history. The research will focus on the literary works which „formed Bratislava“ as a semiotic space after 1918. Our goal is to reconstruct the relevant corpus of such writings and interpret them from the viewpoint of literary history (evolution and typology) and current interdisciplinary approaches of the humanities (the urban studies, geopoetics, area research etc.). Although the main subject of the research is Slovak literature, it will also include overlaps with Czech and Hungarian literatures, which have contributed to the formation of the city. |

Emotions in literature from perspective of cognitive literary studies. |
Emócie v literatúre: kognitívnovedný pohľad |
Program: |
VEGA |
Project leader: |
PhDr. Kuzmíková Jana CSc. |
Annotation: | The goal is to examine the role of emotions in literary communication from the cognitive aspect. Cognitive literary studies through empirical research of the understanding literature addresses emotions in a broad cognitive space. Emotions may be involved in dysfunctional cognition (beliefs, schemes, stereotypes) and the functional cognition (rational thinking). Examination of emotions in different ways of reading (reading types, emotional and cognitive empathy) as well as text analysis of emotional stimuli (elements and structures of narrative, lyrical and descriptive texts) can explain and test the relevant role of emotions in literary communication and then point out the benefits and limitations of different types of literary works also in the educational and teaching process. General literary contribution of the project is to extend the theoretical basis of research of literature, introduce a more complex and comprehensive analysis of literary communication, and review the scope of reading competence. |

Literary Text, Poetics, Artistic Work |
Literárny text, poetika, umelecká práca |
Program: |
VEGA |
Project leader: |
PhDr. Prušková Zora CSc. |
Annotation: | The project Literary Text, Poetics, Artistic Work will deal with the Slovak prosaic works after 1945. It will aim at
searching for connections between the systemic poetics and the artistic work as a singular event of the authorial
creation. The result will be a new insight into the interpretative options, attribution of higher significance to the
element of the author’s singularity and to the imagination as integral parts of the existentially-situated and
existentially-oriented poetics. The project should initiate an innovative approach to the common literary-historical and cultural-typological stereotypes in terms of assessment of the modern post-war prose. |

Literature Supporting Folk Culturing, Educating and Enlightening (Forms and Changes in Functional Model of Literature in Slovak Literature in the End of the 19th and the First Third of the 20th Century) |
Literatúra v službách výchovy (Podoby a premeny funkčného modelu literatúry v slovenskej literatúre na konci 19. a v prvej tretine 20. storočia). |
Program: |
VEGA |
Project leader: |
Mgr. Hučková Dana CSc. |
Annotation: | The project focuses on problems of Slovak literature supporting national awareness and education, as well as literature as a means of folk culturing or enlightening, in the period between the end of the 19th and the first third of the 20th century. Semantics of upbringing and education is researched on several different levels. The initial starting point is a new excerption of relevant press of the era and book editions, focusing on literary texts referring to heterogeneous understanding of literature. Texts considering external factors and related to social and educational functions of literature will be central to the project. Besides attention to forms and transformations of this functional model of literature, research will also focus on literary and communication situations related to them, especially on categories of literary life, such as institutions, media and protagonists of literary culture. Research of text production, distribution and reception will be complemented by the problem of sedimentation of the cultural memory.

Methodological Procedures in Literary-Scholarship Research with an Impact on the Media Environment |
Metodologické postupy v literárnovednom výskume s presahom do mediálneho prostredia (FF UPJŠ Košice) |
Program: |
SRDA |
Project leader: |
Mgr. Hučková Dana CSc. |
Annotation: | This four-year project is focused on the functional use of methodological procedures in an interdisciplinary oriented literary-scholarship research. It is based on the philological tradition of literary scholarship in Slovakia, it will be focused on the application of hermeneutic, formal, heuristic, structuralist, comparative, cognitive, and semiotic approaches with interdisciplinary overlaps into the media environment. The main objective is to increase the exactness in literary research, namely in the analytical-interpretative work with source texts (from the reception aesthetics, creation of perceptual codes to aperceptive methodological procedures) and in the review of inter-literary relations within the Czech-Slovak and Central European contexts (with the emphasis laid on genetic and poetological specifics of Slovak literature in wider cultural contexts). The overlap into the media environment follows the variability of the literary text (of not merely Slovak literature) as a media product (especially current trends in theatrical and audio-visual adaptations) especially with regard to the formal and thematic processing of the contemporaneous stereotypes in the socio-cultural context with functional use of specific methodological procedures. The objective of the project is to make available the monographically prepared outcomes of critical review of established theorems and their sustainable audio-visual mediation. Therefore, specific authors and artistic texts are in the centre of the monitored issues (on the genological axis of poetry, fiction, drama) with an emphasis on the late 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. The scientific assumption is a change in the previous literary-historical classification of particular authors, in a qualitative re-evaluation of their poetics and creative contribution to the development of Slovak literature (with regard to the differentiation of Realism and Modern and aesthetic pluralism in the interwar literature). |

Modernism in Slovak Literature II |
Modernizmus v slovenskej literatúre II |
Program: |
VEGA |
Project leader: |
Mgr. Habaj Michal PhD. |
Annotation: | The project continues a project VEGA on Modernism solved between 2016 and 2019. Besides previously researched Modernist forms, tendencies and aspects in Slovak literature between 1900 and 1948, it researches other problems, such as terminology, periodisation, typology of Modernist literature, as well as philosophical and aesthetic contexts and concepts of respective forms of Modernism (Slovak Modern School – Second Modern School – Expressionism – Avant-garde – Catholic Modern School, and others). It also researches Modernist discourse on autonomy of arts, as well as media and institutions of literary life in this period that were a venue for Modernist poetics and discussions. The reconstruction of Modernism in Slovak literature of the first half of the 20th century wishes to result in a new synthesis in literary history, using relevant and updated methodological approaches. |

Národnoobrodenecké reprezentácie - mody realizácie, transgresie a tranzície |
Program: |
VEGA |
Project leader: |
Mgr. Taranenková Ivana PhD. |
Annotation: | The project aims to reconstruct the National Revival model of representations of the “long” 19th century in Slovak literature through semiotic analysis and interpretations of the literary corpus of the period under examination. The research will examine how the model changed through the transgressive and transitional processes it underwent in this period and identify the dominant aesthetic, poetic and genre categories in which this kind of representation took place, was modified and disrupted, focusing on three selected thematic areas: identity, space and time. The key analytical category used in the project will be the notion of mode, as used in Western literatury criticism (N. Frye, A. Fowler, G. Genette, C. Guillén) in terms of a genre-transcending category or a modifying genre indicator. The project further aims to identify the literary and genre techniques through which ideological elements are re-presented in individual texts and the converse effect it has on culture and society. |

Annotation: | The project will identify and present fundamental terms of poetics of Slovak literature between 18th - 21st centuries. It tracks changes and internal metamorphoses of individual poetic issues such as composition of prosiac (narrative) and lyrical (ennunciative) texts, genre characteristics of texts, etc. The terms are studied as both poetical and historical events with both their configurations and re-configurations. One of the significan cofigurations and reconfigurations of literary events is represented by the ratio and proportion of manifestedness and latentness of individual literary events such as classicism, romanticism, realism, parnasism, modern, avantgarde, existential literature. |

Slovak preach literature in the 19th century |
Slovenská kázňová spisba v 19. storočí |

Project leader: |
doc. PhDr. Brtáňová Erika CSc. |
Annotation: | An important part of the Slovak literature is spiritual element, especially the genre of sermon or homily. In the
history of the Slovak literature, it has so far been given only marginal attention (during the communist period this
topic was deliberately circumvented and not all library and archival collections were accessible). This genre is also
important because it influenced the broad strata of the population, shaped the modern Slovak national and cultural
identity, and formed the same Catholic and Protestant communities. The project will map sermon writing in Slovak
language from the 19th century, primarily printed and secondary preserved manuscript. This is a basic research
project that will dominantly examine the original editions of sermons and the preserved manuscripts of sermons in
memory institutions. The aim of the project is to create partial studies, two anthologies (pastoral letters of Catholic
bishops; selection of classical sermons according to several criteria), preparation of the lexicon of sermon authors
and the monographic analytical-synthetic processing of the whole issue. |
