In analogy with the abelian extensions of effect algebras, extensions of D-sets by abelian groups are studied. It is shown that every cancellative, unital D-set can be considered as an extension of a D-poset by an abelian group. The notion of a cocycle on a D-set is introduced and relations between abelian extensions and cocycles are shown.
