The deep inveteracy of the popular piety in culture is distinctly reflected in the language. This is particularly evident in the semantic development of words, many of which have acquired a new meaning, sometimes seemingly unrelated to the original religious context. Such developments can be observed in dialects, for example in the words and expressions koledovať [literally to carol], which has acquired the expressive meaning ‘to wander, to go from house to house’, or koledovať si [to carol oneself] meaning ‘to want something for oneself, to ask for something (unpleasant)’, litánie [litany] used expressively to denote ‘long, often repetitive speeches, usually reproachful’, pátričky [rosary] referring to ‘beads, necklace’ and ‘strung on a thread a) straw Christmas tree ornaments or b) gingerbread rings sold as Feasts pastries’, ľuteránska procesija [Lutheran procession] meaning ‘traditional food, barley groats with peas’. The meaning of jasle [crib] ‘daycare center for young children (up to three years of age) of employed mothers’ is not present in dialects, but represents a case rooted in popular piety. As this paper demonstrates, such semantic developments may have been influenced by several factors, for instance the external form and the development of a particular expression of popular piety, but also the attitude towards its individual elements or the use of devotional objects. The study examines the processes that led to the semantic development of these words and expressions. The analysis is based on the standard methods and procedures of contemporary etymological research, particularly the historical-comparative method and the Wörter und Sachen method.
