This paper reports a case study on a temporal XY(Z) construction from the family of Slovak XYZ constructions which have been widely discussed in many theoretical studies. These constructions can be described as the metaphoric-metonymic structures with syntactic pattern X – COP – nový/ďalší/druhý/novodobý – Y – (Z). On the basis of data drawn from corpus Omnia Slovaca IV Maior Beta it is shown how this construction differs from other types of XYZ constructions as well as from the analogous fully compositional expressions with given adjectives. The paper provides a corpus-based analysis on the X and Y slot, which can be occupied by either proper or common nouns. In the temporal XY(Z) construction, the element X becomes the new salient member of the category. In that way the switch in paragon model occurs so that the category in the target domain is modified. If the position Y is occupied by proper noun, it refers to the whole category on the basis of typical characteristics which are evoked by the salient member of given category. It is also shown that given structures are widely used in contemporary texts as communicative shortcuts as well as access points to rich knowledge background providing information with less cognitive effort than using the literal expression.
