This study examines how the Slovak writer Pavel Vilikovský (1941–2020), in his writing from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, employs the motif of the journey and travel as an ironic, subversive reflection on Slovak national identity. In opposition to earlier pathos-laden mythmaking, his prose exposes the illusory nature of utilitarian national narratives. The journey becomes a space of confrontation between the domestic and the foreign, the rural and the urban, the Slovak and the global. To be “unhomed” constitutes a new mode of self-awareness, enabling the distance necessary for self-reflection. Vilikovský questions grand ideological concepts, including national history, and seeks authenticity in elusive fragments of reality.
