The polymedia work of artist Ivan Štěpán (1937 – 1986) has not yet been comprehensively studied. In the 1960 s, he focused on scenography, object creation, environments, book and magazine design, as well as poster and print design. In the following decades, he devoted himself mainly to exhibition design, communication design, and logotypes. In this text, I aim to present the artist as a versatile creator, while the core part will be dedicated to his graphic design concepts and realizations, attempting to capture his artistic activity across the broad spectrum of media in which he moved with confidence. The first part deals with the general characteristics of Štěpán’s work; the second focuses on his works on paper — graphic design (with an emphasis on poster art) and book design (illustrations and cover designs). The archive of the Slovak Design Museum has preserved a large collection of printed materials, posters, and promotional works, through which it is possible to trace the evolution of the artist’s style, his refined artistic expression, and his remarkable sense of humor. The work of Ivan Štěpán illustrates how the role of the artist was shaped and what it encompassed — from commissioned work for institutions and enterprises to his own independent creations and complex installation environments.
