The study presents a new identification of a painting originally recorded as “Portrait of an Old Man”in the collection of the Museum at Červený Kameň Castle. The fact that it is a portrait of Archimedes is a springboard both to the presentation of part of the work of the author of the original, Joachim von Sandrart, and to reflections on the iconographic ambiguity of the depictions of some historical/ legendary figures, in this case Archimedes and the Apostle Thomas “the Architect”.
