Currently, theoretical considerations of short prose focus mainly on individual authors’ poetics. This brings to the fore questions of gender identity and approaches such as postcolonialism and postsocialism. The aim of this study is to provide a basic orientation in works on short prose since the 1990s and to consider theories of short prose in the context of world literature, with an emphasis on Slovak, Anglophone and Russian literary studies. The study also outlines differences in the understanding of genological terminology in the above-mentioned areas of literary studies, without neglecting questions of the “shortness” of short prose.
