M. Majtán, who would have turned 90 last year, can be considered one of the key pioneers of applied and practical national onomastics. His scientific work spans a wide range of fields within both historical and contemporary linguistics, with a particular focus on onomastics. In this study, we focus on his contributions to literary onomastics, the research of Slovak surnames, and Slovak toponymy and hydronymy (he was a pioneer of the Hydronymia Slovaciae project), as well as historical lexicon and the standardization of geographical nomenclature. The individual areas of M. Majtán’s scientific research presented in this study are supplemented with analytical commentary on the outlined issues.
