During the Second World War, a significant number of soldiers of Jewish origin fought in the ranks of the Czechoslovak resistance. Many of them took part in the fighting in France or in the Middle East and subsequently made their way to Great Britain and later back to the European mainland, where they ended the war during the fighting at Dunkirk. In the ranks of the home resistance they were involved, among other things, in the battles of the Slovak National Uprising and subsequently also in partisan fighting. Despite the fact that all these soldiers made clear by their deployment their courage and willingness to fight for the restoration of Czechoslovakia and against the Nazi or Tiso’s regime, the Jews also encountered manifestations of anti-Semitism on the part of their comrades in arms. In this way, my study does not only point to the direct combat deployment of soldiers of Jewish origin, but also to the ways in which their activities were limited on the basis of their Jewish background. One example is the non-existent or minimal representation in special operations organized by the Czechoslovak Second Department of the Ministry of National Defence in London, or in the ranks of the Czechoslovak Air Force during the fighting of World War II. The study thus comprises two basic units – presenting the state of the art of research related to the involvement of Jewish resistance fighters in the Czechoslovak resistance at home and abroad, and highlighting the manifestations of anti-Semitism encountered by these soldiers at the hands of their fellow soldiers, or their superior officers, during the wartime conflict and later by the majority in peacetime as well.
