A new mode of using all-or-nothing transforms

We suggest a new mode of using all-or-nothing transforms in conjunction with a symmetric encryption scheme. Our goal is to have a secure encryption mode with the property that brute force attacks on the scheme are slowed down by a predefined factor. Unlike [R. L. Rivest: All-or-nothing encryption and the package transform, Fast Software Encryption '97, Lecture Notes in Comput. Sci, Vol. 1267, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1997, pp. 210–218], we use a different method which is more efficient and flexible, and ensures that an adversary does not even know the exact ciphertext that has to be attacked.
