O článku:
Očakávania a realita Popredný slovenský divadelný teoretik a kritik publikuje kapitolu z pripravovanej monografie francúzskeho režiséra Jacquesa Copeaua. Vtedajší predseda francúzskej vlády, Georges Clemenceau Copeauovi osobne navrhol, aby urobil turné do Spojených štátov amerických. V tom čase totiž zo zahraničných kultúr v USA naplno dominovala nemecká. V New Yorku pôsobilo stále Nemecké divadlo pokladané za najlepšie v meste, Max Reinhardt získal veľa finančných prostriedkov na to, aby exportoval svoje inscenácie do amerických miest. Clemenceau si dobre uvedomoval silu, akú má umenie, okrem toho patril v predvojnovom čase k častým návštevníkom Starého holubníka a napokon, sám bol literátom. Koncom februára 1917 Copeauovi navrhol to isté, čo predtým Georges Clemenceau – priviesť do USA celý Starý holubník. Tieto drevené konštrukcie pripomínajúce staré pódiá commedie dell’arte, boli jedinou pridanou stavbou, ktorá dopĺňala scénu, inak ostali všade naokolo len voľné, nedekorované priestory, niekedy obohatené o lavičku, kus nábytku a podobne.
Miloš Mistrík Expectations and Reality A prominent Slovak theatrical theoretist and critic is publishing a chapter from the prepared monography on the French director Jacques COPEAU. The theatre Old Dovecot (Vieux-Colombier) led by Jacques COPEAU had a very successful season in 1913/1914. It brought a new approach to the historionic art and a new conception of scenography, a new way of directing, and caused that France was linked with similar movements related to theatre renewal that had been originating in that period mainly in Germany, Russia, but also in other European countries. Shortly before summer 1914 Jacques COPEAU parted with his audience promising to open the theatre again in autumn, with a further development with regard to the programme renewal. But the World War I started. Jacques COPEAU and other actors were recruited and the theatre Old Dovecot was closed. The then Prime Minister of the French Government Georges CLEMENCEAU personally suggested to COPEAU to make a tour to the United States of America. From the abroad cultures in the USA of that time, was fully dominating German culture. The permanent German theatre that had been performing in New York, was considered the best in the city, Max REINHARDT got a lot of finance resources to export his stagings into American cities. CLEMENCEAU was fully aware of the art power and besides that, he was a frequent visitor of the Old Dovecot, and moreover, he himself was a man of letters. Jacques COPEAU accepted his offer. He left for America in January 1917. He took with him lectures on his theatrical intentions, which he had planned to offer overseas. An important lecture was organized for him at the Harvard University, where he had an admirer in the person of a professor Georg Pierce BAKER, whose courses were attended besides others also by Eugene O’Neill. Further lectures were held in New York. The main success was achieved by persuading the maecenas Otto H. KAHN a Francophile who supported the modern art. By the end of 1917 he suggested to COPEAU the same thing what had done before him Georges CLEMENCEAU– to tranfer the whole Old Dovecot to the USA. The introductory performance of the American era of the Old Dovecot theatre took place on 27th November 1917. The first part with a name derived from the Molièr´s play Versailles´improvisation, was a small celebration to open the Old Dovecot in the USA. Suzanne BING in a very light pink dress of Viola from Twelfth Night entered the proscenium, waved at the audience and started slowly by saying: „We are bringing regards from France...While your ships are burdened by supplies, and soldiers try to break through their way to the east, where battles are happening, a milder wind has turned from our shores to yours, sending another ship that is landing tonight in your city crowded with poets, actors, musicians and all the glittering beauty of drama and comedy. In the midst of a war, accept a smile from France....friendly, with respect, with appreciation, we are greeting you“. In some stagings a naked platform appeared in the middle, on an empty stage floor. Until then it was declared to happen only in writing, but now they finally made it real. It was composed out of four adjacently lying cabels that created an elevated area, to which the cabels were leading as follows - from the level of a stage floor in the front two cabels, at the back one, and from each sides of a small staircase one cabel, always from three-four daises.. These wooden constructions resembling old stages commedie dell’arte were only an added construction, complementing the stage, otherwise everywhere else were just free, undecorated areas, sometimes with a bench placed in, or a piece of furniture, etc. COPEAU´s „naked stage“ in all its beauty and exactly according to its described conception, was for the first time introduced in New York, in Garrick Theatre, and from that time on it accompanied him everywhere, after the war in Paris, in French Province, during foreign tours, in indoor halls or outdoor town squares. The basic and unchanged construction of the back stage was called by COPEAU „the permanent stage“ or a „diapositive“. The added and just seldom appearing short construction in the front was called „the naked stage“. This set was recorded as the greatest contribution into the development of scenography. The Old Dovecot continued in the first season by the opening night Twelfth Night and by renewing The Brothers Karamazov. The character of Smerdyakov was played by François Gournac, to whom it was a lifetime opportunity. Never before he had got so much appreciation like then. But not just him, also other actors showed to the American audience this philosophical, realistic and elaborated picture of the period produced by a great Russian author. Not often the audience could see such a mature connection between a master in literature and a well balanced troupe. The Old Dovecot it was very different from Broadway – where two or three stars were surrounded just by average or even below standard quality actors. The French actors were acting with enthusiasm, collectively, and often exceeding their possibilities. They were aware of the fact that it was more than just a theatre – they represented a cultural and moral institution. Jacques COPEAU himself did not act a lot then. He was busy with the organizational side, whether to stay with the troupe in America also for the next season. Together with Otto KAHN, after the audience had showed its interest, they agreed to get the support of his also for the next year. The American critic with certain exceptions approved the troupe during the first year, and was giving it as an example to other domestic troupes. Also another continuing goal – the propagandistic one was present there. The next opening was announced by COPEAU on 11th November 1918. The play Crainquebille by Anatol Franc and Cloak of Happiness by the French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau was to be performed. On the very day of the opening, America learnt that Germany had capitulated. The evening celebrations that were held in the city culminated by presenting a play written by the Prime Minister representing one of the victorious powers. The friends from France called COPEAU to come back home immediately. An explosion of the after -war life, a new energy required fast and energetic steps. Everybody wanted the Old Dovecot to be renewed in Paris. But they were aware it was possible on condition the head and the heart of the idea – Jacques COPEAU – was present too. The Old Dovecot mission in the USA was concluded on 7th April 1919 by the final performance Miracle Goblet by La Fontain, followed by Farewell Improvisation, where the troupe members together with COPEAU summarized the basic data on what had been done within the period of two years. The show did not miss on reminding the most favourite characters, showing their costumes, and thanking to Otto KAHN and to America for accepting them.
