On the History of Slovak Translations of Byzantine Liturgical texts.

For Slovak Christians of the Byzantine rite Church Slavonic was the liturgical language par excellence for many centuries. Opinions about the necessity to substitute Church Slavonic by the literary Slovak language in liturgy started to appear not sooner than at the end of the thirties of the 20th century. The first Slovak translation of St. Joann Chrisostomos’ Liturgy was made by Greek Catholic priest Pavol Spišák in l933. During the following period of more than 60 years several translations not only of the above mentioned liturgy but also of two other eastern liturgies – namely those of St. Bazil the Great and St. Gregor – has appeared. The latest translation was published in 1998. The author of the article calls attention on some discrepancies between the original Greek text of the liturgy and its Church Slavonic and Slovak translations.
