The paper deals with the development of the Middle Danube channel in the Gabčíkovo waterworks suroundings (river km 1824 - 1831, aproximately 39 km from the Slovak Capital, Bratislava). Based mainly on two A. E. Fritsch early local historical maps (outstanding surve-yor from Bratislava, 1715-1778) but also with the aid of modem maps, air photos, and a knowledge of the field situation, the whole sequence of complicated meander loops (lateral activity by progression and cutoffs) in the second-half of the 17th and in the 18th century was reconstructed. As well, the confectured river pattern change was confirmed through dating in this stretch between 1798 – 1815. A wide and unstable braided pattern arose as a consequence of the overenrichment of the bed load out of the single variably compact meandering river bed which was relieved by smaler side arms until the 18th century. This meant a significant change in the inland delta ecosystem when gravel- and sand- bars gradually developed into the systém of many islands and arms of the 19th century. An analysis of historical maps provides new data on recent Danube history, flood damage and control history, and absolute dating of the floodplain. Two of the oldest and most well-preserved meanders date back to 2nd half of the 17th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries, 3 villages and the military fortress of Seprős were threatened or destroyed, respectively, by meanders.
