The belief in the veracity of different conspiracy theories appears to be a relatively
marginal subject of research in psychology, but the importance of this phenomenon is on the rise. These convictions have entered the mainstream political and social discourse in Slovakia and are largely disseminated in society. In this paper, I present an overview of the psychological findings related to people who succumbed to these
beliefs. We seek to find certain possible determinants of the belief in conspiracy theories on the basis of known cognitive mechanisms and individual characteristics. Psychological research also point out certain links between such convictions and personal qualities and beliefs which often go beyond the values of a democratic society based on civil rights. I call on giving more attention to this topic, as it can represent a potentially risky area, the significance of which should not be underestimated.
