The music historian Ernest Zavarský (1913-1995) is one of the founders of modern Slovak music historiography, with extensive spiritual, scholarly, artistic and musical interests. He was active also as a music commentator, organ-builder, and organologist. Despite political persecution he left behind him an extensive work of music history, which enriched this scholarly discipline with many new key findings. At first his focus was on contemporary Slovak music, especially the compositions of Eugen Suchoň. His central works include published monographs on Ján Levoslav Bella (1955) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1971); the last-named work appeared also in Czech (1979, 1986), Polish (1973, 1979, 1985) and German (2004). His research on the musical life of the town of Kremnica is also a notable contribution. He is the author of a number of articles in the first edition of the German music encyclopaedia MGG.
