Musical Theatre in Bratislava from the Second Half of the 19th Century to the First Half of the 20th Century (Exponents, Institutions, Repertory, Reflection)
Hudobné divadlo v Bratislave od druhej polovice 19. do prvej polovice 20. storočia (osobnosti, inštitúcie, repertoár, reflexia)
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Laslavíková Jana PhD.
Annotation:The project Musical Theatre in Bratislava from the Second Half of the 19th Century to the First Half of the 20th Century (Exponents, Institutions, Repertory, Reflection) is based on the primary source research aiming at the evaluation of the repertory of the Municipal Theatre/the present Historical Building of the Slovak National Theatre (SNT) in the period 1886–1920 and examination of the aesthetic-critical views on the musical theatre through the production practice in the SNT in the years 1920–1950. On the basis of the period opera reviews subjected to the text-critical analysis, examining and researching primary and secondary sources (personal legacy, music material, decrees regarding the running of the theatre) and through the compilation of a database of the daily performance schedule from 1886 we will get a general view of the musical theatre operating in one building during two historical periods. A two-volume monograph on the theatre history in Bratislava will be part of the project.

IaS - Individual and Society –their Mutual Reflexion in Historical process
Indivíduum a spoločnosť – ich vzájomná reflexia v historickom procese
Program: APVV
Project leader: PhDr. Michálek Slavomír DrSc.
Annotation:The goal of the project is to offer an innovative approach towards the question of individual through an original methodological approach, which is not used often by the Slovak historiography. Topics dealing with an individual in history have during the last decades almost exclusively concentrated on standard biography of one person. The research of rituals, reflexion, individual self-reflexion, conflicts and political culture is absent or only limited. The same can be said about the reconstruction of life contexts, socio-cultural changes and transformation processes. The content of the project represents the reflexion of individual and his/her identity in the society, formation of stereotypes, one’s own (and strange) view of his/her neighbourhood and everyday activities, social surroundings and formation of a network of social relationships. A book has never been published in Slovakia, which would focus on dealing with the place of individual in society from interdisciplinary perspective, for example in cooperation with similar social sciences (sociology, philosophy, ethnology, political science, auxiliary sciences of history, military history, but also historical anthropology or history of architecture). The goal of the project is therefore to enhance the current basic research (political, economic and social history) and to offer new perspectives on history through the eyes of individual protagonists – people in chronological period from 16th to 20th century. The ambition of the project is to bring a new conceptualization of the history of Slovakia and to reflect the works and research groups of neighbouring countries in order to follow the present-day trends in European historiography.

INDED - Intellectual Heritage and Scientific Communication 1500-1800 with Slovak Relation as a Part of European Culture and Identity
Intelektuálne dedičstvo a vedecká komunikácia 1500-1800 so slovenskými vzťahmi ako súčasť európskej histórie a identity
Program: APVV
Project leader: PhDr. Kowalská Eva DrSc.
Annotation:This interdisciplinary project will be conducted in the following academic fields: Historical science and Archeology, Library and Information Science (social aspects). The project outcomes will be focused on innovative approaches in making available the knowledge of scientific communication and intellectual heritage of the modern age to the public as well as to the community of scholars. The research topic of the project revolves around scientific communication and intellectual heritage. The research problem pertains the material documentation of concrete expressions of scientific correspondence and exchange of information and knowledge among our intellectuals who entered into an academic conversation with foreign scholars and intellectuals regarding science, culture, politics, economics, and education. The specific research problem of the project rests in digitalization and attractive presentation of selected documents to the general public. The general goal of the project is derived from our understanding that the present level of information and communication technologies offers means with the help of which it is possible, for the first time in history, to reconstruct the network of scientific, scholarly, and personal relationship among the European intellectuals of the modern era. At the same time, we are now able to widely distribute the results and input of our specific, intellectual written heritage that is found in the European context, while also promoting new forms of scientific collaboration. The project has a solid national as well as European (international) dimension and enables our scholars to participate in the ongoing COST Action: COST IS1310 Reassembling the Republic of Letters, 1500-1800. (A digital framework for multi-lateral collaboration on Europes intellectual history.)

CMS - A journey to a modern society. Three centuries of the early modern period
Na ceste k modernej spoločnosti. Tri storočia novoveku
Program: APVV
Project leader: PhDr. Čičaj Viliam CSc.
Annotation:Current European and world historiography studying the formation of modern society is based on postulate that it is basically a process of self-realization of an individual. In this sense, the early modern period, also referred to as a pre-modern society (“Vormoderne”), is the most crucial period. At that time, new elements are being formed, without which the existence and birth of modern civil society would not be possible. The historiography of the early modern period has discovered an individual – a personage who in that very period goes through the process of individualization, of which the most important aspect is individual’s independence and freedom. The processes of individualization, social disciplinization, changes in communication practice, creation of new spaces, changes in everyday life, confessionalization etc. are also part of the development of the pre-modern society. On the other hand, other disciplines besides the historiography (sociology, culturology, anthropology, social psychology etc.) also pay attention to this process in the early modern period. This results in the use of many non-traditional and original theoretical and methodological techniques. The aim of the proposed project is, in accordance with modern trends, to improve and integrate Slovakia's history into the wider European context.

The Unplanned City: Architectural and Urban Conceptions of the 20th Century and Their Influence on the Urban Structure of Bratislava
Neplánované mesto: architektonické a urbanistické koncepcie 20. storočia a ich priemet do mestskej štruktúry Bratislavy
Program: VEGA
Project leader: prof. Dr. Ing. arch. Moravčíková Henrieta
Annotation:Bratislava is a characteristic example of a city that was decisively shaped during the 20th century. Over two-thirds of its current area was built in the spirit of the principles of modernism. Yet these urban or architectonic conceptions, paradoxically, largely formulated the urban structure of Bratislava not within the sense of, but directly against the idea of planned aims. The reason for this contradiction between the ideal and the realised was largely the result of sharp discrepancies in social development under various political orders, yet also through competition between local ideas of the creation of the city and the plans of official representatives towards the form of a national capital. The project focuses on the identification and evaluation of specific places within the urban structure that represent the investigated phenomenon of an unplanned city. With further generalisation, it will create an architectonic-urban typology of key situations influencing the form of the city in the 20th century.

Annotation:Bratislava is a characteristic example of a city that was decisively shaped by the ideas of the 20th century. The reason for this contradiction between the ideal and the realised was largely the result of sharp discrepancies in social development under various political orders, yet also through competition between local ideas of the creation of the city and the plans of official representatives towards the form of a national (or regional) capital. The project focuses on the identification and evaluation of specific places within the urban structure that represent the investigated phenomenon of an unintended city. Compiled into a monograph publication, the acquired knowledge will then serve as a reference point in the process of working with the urban structure of Bratislava. With further generalisation, it will create an architectonic-urban typology of key situations influencing the form of the city in the 20th century.

MOREP - From the Monarchy to the Republic. The Transition Process of the Society in Slovakia in the European Context (from the End of the 19th Century till 1945)
Z monarchie do republiky. Proces tranzície spoločnosti na Slovensku v európskom kontexte (od konca 19. storočia do roku 1945)
Program: APVV
Project leader: PhDr. Kováč Dušan DrSc.
Annotation:History of Slovakia and the Central European Region in the 20th century was marked by frequent changes of political regimes. New political elites that got hold of the power after these upheavals strongly declared their distaste for the previous periods. This fact influenced also approach of the Slovak historiography to the research of the 1st half of the 20th century. Traditional Slovak historiographical writing was focused mostly on the aspects of discontinuity and change. The long-term trends did not belong to preferred themes of the research. The goal of the project is to map long-term development of the Slovak society from the end of the 19th century till 1945. The concept of the project is based on a modern processing of the social development in Slovakia from the end of the 19th century till the first half of the 20th century considering the continuity and discontinuity of numerous development aspects and trends which transcendent the traditional political milestones of 1918 and 1939. This approach has not been applied by the Slovak historiography very often yet. The history of Slovakia has been usually studied chronologically divided according to those mentioned milestones. Applying this methodology, the longer trends of the social development were getting only small attention from the historians. These trends include especially processes related to modernization, economic development, social phenomenon, trends incivil society and political culture or the long-term developments in culture, science and education. The goal of the research group is to fill in this gap and bring up more complex view on the social changes in Slovakia during the searched period.
