Experience Science Live: Science Slam SAS 2025 – Fun, Fascination, and Humor

22. 4. 2025 | 106 visits

After a hiatus, the globally popular scientific event, Science Slam, is returning to Slovakia. On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 6:00 PM, three female researchers and three male researchers will take the stage at the Great Hall of Kácečko, a cultural hub in Bratislava, with a single goal: to demonstrate that science can be entertaining, accessible, and fascinating. Admission is free, but registration is required.

“We want to bring science closer to people. Science Slam SAS is an opportunity to show that even complex topics can be explained simply and with humor,” says Filip Květoň from the Institute of Chemistry of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the event organizer.

Researchers from the Slovak Academy of Sciences will present their research to the audience in just a few minutes. The public will thus experience science live, in an entertaining way, and without PowerPoint. Science Slam demonstrates that science doesn't have to be dry; it can be engaging, funny, and, above all, understandable to everyone. Each performance will last only eight minutes.

“The winner will be determined by the audience themselves. The competition evening is not just about facts but also about charisma, storytelling, and the ability to turn complex topics into something that makes people laugh, surprises them, or moves them,” adds F. Květoň. This year's topics are particularly diverse. The public can look forward to lectures on the bioimplant of the future, delve into the world of disease diagnostics using sugars, and be drawn into the issue of the climate crisis. The audience will also meet alcoholic rats, learn something about their own altruism, and participate in the search for efficient computers.

Science Slam SAS 2025 has already kicked off with a preparatory workshop led by Petr Sucháček from Masaryk University, an experienced lecturer in facilitation, non-violent communication, and presentation skills. Thanks to him, the participants prepared to captivate the audience, tell their scientific stories, and convey their enthusiasm for science to the public.
