ESF-UB Conference in Biomedicine

RARE DISEASES: CHANNELS AND TRANSPORTERS

Hotel Eden Roc, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain
8-12 March 2008

Chaired by: Manuel Palacín, Institute for Research in Biomedicine and University of Barcelona, ES & Thomas Jentsch, Leibniz-Institut für Molekulare Pharmakologie and Max-Delbrück-Centrum für Molekulare Medizin, Berlin, DE

The conference is devoted to channels and transporters involved in rare inherited diseases. Specifically TRP and CLC channels, connexins, mitochondrial transporters, heteromeric amino acid transporters, neurotransmitter transporters and ABC transporters and related diseases will be covered. Invited speakers have been selected to broadly address structural biology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry and clinical aspects.

Time will be allotted to poster sessions as well as to short oral communications, to be selected from submitted abstracts.

Scientific programme (including detailed list of invited speakers) and application form are accessible on-line through www.esf.org/conferences/08233.

Closing date for applications as well as for abstract submission: extended to 7 January 2008.

Some grants available for young researchers to cover the conference fee and possibly part of the travel costs. Grant requests should be made by ticking appropriate field(s) in the paragraph "Grant application" of the application form (Ctrl + Click to follow the link).

ESF-UB Conference in Biomedicine

SYSTEMS BIOLOGY

Hotel Eden Roc, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain
12-17 April 2008

Chaired by: Luis Serrano, Centre for Genomic Regulation, Barcelona, ES, Roel van Driel, University of Amsterdam, NL & Rudolf Aebersold, Swiss Federal Inst. of Technology, CH

The ESF-UB Conference on Systems Biology attempts to give a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in the different aspects that are included in systems biology. Thus we will cover network analysis, network modeling, -omics approaches in Systems Biology, relationship between Systems Biology and disease and briefly touch the future avenue of Synthetic Biology.

The conference will be organized around senior speakers presenting the advances in their fields and junior talks selected from abstracts. Special emphasis will be given to poster sessions and open discussions to favor communication between senior and junior scientists.

Scientific programme (including detailed list of invited speakers) and application form are accessible on-line through www.esf.org/conferences/08234.

Closing date for applications as well as for abstract submission: 6 January 2008.

Some grants available for young researchers to cover the conference fee and possibly part of the travel costs. Grant requests should be made by ticking appropriate field(s) in the paragraph "Grant application" of the application form (Ctrl + Click to follow the link).

PHARMACOGENETICS AND PHARMACOGENOMICS: ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS

Hotel Eden Roc, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain
27 June - 2 July 2008

Chaired by: Munir Pirmohamed, University of Liverpool, UK & Laurent Becquemont, Hôpital Bicêtre, Paris, FR

Adverse drug reactions are a major problem for healthcare services, the pharmaceutical industry and regulators. This has been highlighted recently with some high-profile drug withdrawals and regulatory decisions. There is an urgent need to develop strategies to reduce the burden of adverse drug reaction – this needs to apply to both drug development (to reduce the rate of attrition) and during clinical use (to reduce patient morbidity, mortality, costs to healthcare, and drug withdrawals). Although there are many factors involved in the causation of adverse drug reactions, and hence in the processes that will be needed to improve drug safety, pharmacogenomics is an important technology that could provide major benefits. The promise of pharmacogenomics in preventing adverse drug reactions has already been witnessed through studies on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and haemolysis associated with antimalarials, TPMT testing and 6-mercaptopurine toxicity and HLA-B*5701 genotyping and abacavir hypersensitivity.

The ESF-UB Conference on Pharmacogenomics will concentrate on adverse drug reactions this year, providing an interactive forum for both senior and junior researchers to learn about the latest developments in safety pharmacogenomics.

Scientific programme (including detailed list of invited speakers) and application form are accessible on-line through www.esf.org/conferences/08269.

Closing date for applications as well as for abstract submission: 30 March 2008.

Some grants available for young researchers to cover the conference fee and possibly part of the travel costs. Grant requests should be made by ticking appropriate field(s) in the paragraph "Grant application" of the application form (Ctrl + Click to follow the link).
