Composites of nano cerium and carbon enterosorbents in the treatment of acute radiation

Good news – research funded within the frame of the NATO call

A research group from the Institute of Experimental Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice led by Dr  Andrej Musatov, DrSc., received the financial support from the NATO project within the frame of the "NATO - Science for Peace and Security" call. The project entitled "New Composites of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles and Carbon Enterosorbents for the Treatment After Acute Radiation" (project G5683) is coordinated by Prof.  Svitlana Lyubchyk from Associação para a Inovação e Desenvolvimento da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal.  The consortium also includes researchers from the Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry and the Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the University of Alicante in Spain and researchers from the Department of Biophysics and the Department of Magnetism of the Institute of Experimental Physics in Košice.

In the next 3 years, the members of the research groups will apply themselves to a task of the development and preparation of new nanocomposites intended for the treatment of diseases after acute radiation. The attention is focused on the combined use of uncoated cerium oxide nanoparticles and the latest highly active carbon enterosorbent intended for oral use. The practical result of the project will be the experimental implementation of a completely new approach to the treatment of acute radiation, which will be compatible with classical cytokine therapy. We expect that the research will lead to the design of a new drug ready for testing in preclinical studies.
