The pioneering and significant process of evaluation of individual SAS institutes by a panel of international experts which lasted some months has concluded with the review of the appeals of some organizations.
The essence of the assessment was the comparison of whether or not SAS was performing top-level research in the European area with the evaluation by international experts of SAS and was not considered as “judgment” but friendly recommendations on how to improve in the future. Among other things, the experts also commended the merging of some SAS institutes into larger units, emphasizing the need for their reorganization. One of the recommendations was also to develop a national research strategy in Slovakia.
The SAS Presidium took into account some of the arguments of the entities evaluated and in eight cases adjusted the final evaluation in partial indicators; in the case of the SAS Institute of Construction and Architecture, a double correction was made. The overall categorization of SAS organizations has been left to the panel of International Experts in the light of the proposed evaluation results. Following the end of the evaluation process, the SAS Scientific Organizations will develop their research strategy and action plans for the next period based on the recommendations of international experts, by the end of September.
In the review of the completed evaluation process, the Institute of Ethnology and the Polymer Institute finished in the highest category of evaluation. The International Panel confirmed that their research is one of the top international leaders in the European context and the organizations have demonstrated significant contributions in the field, achieving international recognition in Europe.
In the second rating category, thirty SAS Institutes were outlined as performing research that is visible at the European level and organizations have achieved valuable results in their field in Europe. In the third category, stating that research has solid foundations and contributed to the knowledge of the field at European level with visibility at national level, the International Panel of Experts ranked twenty organizations with five being placed in the weakest category.
