Igor Lacík, the President of the SAS Polymer Institute, is the holder of the prestigious 2015 ʼCrystal Wingʼ award in the category of Medicine and Science. He was among eleven personalities from various walks of life who were awarded Crystal Wings (Krištálové krídlo) at the 19th annual ceremony held in the Slovak National Theatre building in Bratislava on Sunday 24 January.
A total number of twenty-seven personalities were nominated for the Crystal Wing awards. Peter Celec, Peter Vršanský and Igor Lacík, who has been working on long-term research dedicated to the treatment of diabetes, were selected in the category of Medicine and Science. "It was really an honour just to be nominated. Taking into consideration great results achieved by our research personalities, I believe that it was a difficult task for the jury to select nominees," Igor Lacík said. He, together with his colleagues from the Department for Biomaterials Research, is engaged in the development of special capsules. In the near future, these might help with the transplantation of pancreatic islets, improving the prospects for some patients suffering from diabetes. In 2015, a Slovak team, under the supervision of Igor Lacík, became a member of the prestigious Encapsulation Consortium the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It aims to provide treatment for patients with type 1 diabetes.
"We are glad that we have become one of the key research workplaces worldwide. Our endeavours are targeted at the development of polymer microcapsules for transplantation of pancreatic islets in a preclinical, non-human primate model. Our task and effort is to provide microcapsules which will demonstrate ability to control blood sugar levels in a preclinical model. In the Consortium, the SAS Polymer Institute acts, at the same time, as an expert workplace for the other members of the Consortium in the areas of polymeric biomaterials, microcapsules and the encapsulation process," Igor Lacík explained. As well as receiving the Crystal Wing award, he was also celebrating his birthday. Many happy returns!
