On September 1-4, 2009, the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics SAS organized in Park Inn Hotel in Bratislava the international conference oriented to porous metallic materials and metallic foams MetFoam 2009.

The first one from the series of MetFoam conferences was held in Bremen (Germany), in 1999 and became the most important event for scientists from all over the world working in this field. Two following MetFoam conferences were held in Germany as well (Bremen – 2001 and Berlin – 2003) and subsequently, other important world institutions oriented to research of porous metals began to organize this conference. After a great success of the ones in Japan (Kyoto – 2005) and Canada (Montreal – 2007), the conference is now back in Europe.

Owing to its significant contribution in the field of development of aluminium foam production technology and its application in industrial practice, IMMM SAS got the possibility to organize this meeting where scientists, engineers and designers presented the results of their work and had the possibility to discuss with colleagues from the whole world working in this extraordinary developing scientific area. The participants of the conference in number of 154 came from 27 countries of four continents (Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Greece, France, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, The Netherlands, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and U.S.A.).

Prof. Jaromír Pastorek, president of SAS and Dr. František Simančík, director of the Institute opened MetFoam 2009 Conference proceedings. In the introductory plenary section 3 invited lectures were included, in which G. Stephani (Germany), L.-P. Lefebvre (Canada) and H. Nakajima (Japan) presented the most interesting research and development results acquired in the last two years in the area of cellular metals in Europe, America and Asia. Further conference proceedings took place in 16 sections, in 79 lectures, 8 of them were invited key-note lectures. In poster section 57 posters were presented. Lectures and poster presentations covered the whole area of development, production and evaluation of properties and possibilities of cellular metallic materials application in industrial practice, in relation with basic conference subjects:
  • physics of foaming, pore nucleation, pore growth and coalescence, foam stabilisation,
  • techniques for making foams and other cellular metals, effect of processing parameters on the structure and properties,
  • morphological and microstructural characterization at different size scales,
  • property profiles in relation with porous structure,
  • modelling of structure, structure development and related properties,
  • secondary operations (joining, coating, machining, shaping, etc.),
  • challenging applications and case studies incl. component design criteria.
In the end of the second conference day, the participants met at a dinner at Červený Kameň Castle. In the pleasant atmosphere of castle riding-hall, they have the possibility of informal discussion with friends from partner institutions and acquisition of new contacts for future research and development activities.
