The Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences warmly invites you to two events with Professor Hiroki Takakura of Tohoku University, Japan. In-person participation is warmly encouraged. If you are unable to attend in person, you are welcome to join online.
5 October 2026 at 17:00 CET – Public Lecture at SAS Small Congress Centre, Štefánikova 3, Bratislava
Human History Viewed from Human-Animal Mutualism: A Challenge of Siberian Anthropology

6 October 2026 at 09:30 CET – Seminar in the Meeting Room, Institute of Philosophy SAS, Klemensova 19, Bratislava
Culture in Recovery: Anthropology and the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
How do communities rebuild after catastrophe, and what role does culture play? Professor Takakura draws on his book Anthropology and Disaster in Japan (Routledge, 2023) to discuss the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Sendai, approaching it as both a victim and an ethnographer. Through folk performing arts, paddy farmers and small-scale fishers, he shows how intangible heritage and local knowledge drive recovery. Followed by an open discussion.
