Science Fits Right In at Pohoda
For the first time, the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) participated in the multi-genre Pohoda Festival, bringing science to one of Slovakia’s most vibrant cultural events. At the heart of the festival grounds at Trenčín Airport, SAS created the magical Land of Curiosity, demonstrating that the pursuit of knowledge and a free cultural spirit naturally belong together.
From 9 to 11 July 2026, the eye-catching domed building served as the home to 19 SAS institutes from across Slovakia. Over three festival days, researchers transformed complex scientific topics into engaging experiences for thousands of curious visitors. The programme also featured lectures, panel discussions, a live recording of the SAS Science Podcast, and a Science Slam.
“If you want to talk about science, you need scientists. The good news is that they’re here, they’ll be with you throughout the festival, and they’re ready to discuss their work with you,” said Martin Venhart, President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, as he opened the programme.
The domed building was filled every day with interactive exhibits, hands-on demonstrations, discussions on current societal issues, and countless spontaneous conversations about science. Visitors were often surprised by the Academy’s modern presentation.
“This is what the Slovak Academy of Sciences looks like? So modern and fresh? Wow!” one visitor exclaimed upon entering the domed building.
Researchers captivated audiences of all ages with engaging demonstrations and patient explanations. Many visitors returned repeatedly throughout the festival, as different SAS institutes presented new activities each day.
“There were countless people, but their genuine interest in our work and their positive feedback gave us so much energy. They were incredibly appreciative and attentive,” said one of the participating researchers.
The stage programme was hosted by Soňa G. Lutherová, who moderated the discussion What Kind of Slovakia Do We Want in 2040? with Martin Smatana, Richard Filčák, and Martin Venhart, as well as Peter Boháč, who interviewed Daniela Dvořáková and moderated a discussion on the importance of science in Slovakia with Martin Venhart and Pavol Siman, member of the SAS Presidium. Representatives of all participating SAS institutes also took to the stage, where Tomáš Hromádka moderated a series of short talks and audience discussions.
Visitors could participate in a wide range of interactive activities, including scientific experiments, quizzes, a game exploring discrimination and social inequalities, and a wall where they could leave messages for scientists. Many also appreciated the opportunity to relax on beanbags while browsing publications from the Open Academy initiative.
Climate change was another major theme. The slogan “Climate Change Is Here!”, printed on SAS hand fans that quickly became a festival favourite, also served as the title of a discussion featuring botanist Lucia Čahojová, landscape ecologist Pavol Kenderessy, and geographer Miloš Rusnák.
“Pohoda has always been, and continues to be, a celebration. A celebration of wonderful people, great music, good coffee, and three days of inspiring conversations about climate, history, technology, and ourselves. I want to thank everyone who visited us, tried our experiments, completed our quizzes, or joined us in passionate discussions. The curiosity and enthusiasm of the audience proved that outstanding science and the festival atmosphere are a perfect match,” said Pavol Siman, member of the SAS Presidium.
