SAS astronomers invite visitors to visit high-altitude observatories
The observatories on Lomnický štít and Skalnaté Pleso are usually accessible only to scientists, as they are fully operational research facilities with sensitive instrumentation. However, once a year, employees of the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences open their doors to the general public. This year, the Open Days will take place on July 18 and August 8.
You will be able to access Lomnický štít continuously throughout the cable car's operation. Entrances to Skalnaté Pleso will be organised every 30 minutes from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
The observatory on Lomnický štít (at an altitude of 2,632 m above sea level) is one of the world's leading solar observation centres. It is home to a unique device - a coronagraph.
The observatory at Skalnatý Pleso is the cradle of modern Slovak astronomy – it was here that the history of professional astronomy in Slovakia began in 1943, thanks to the efforts of the Czech astronomer and climatologist Antonín Bečvář. Today, there is a modern telescope with a main mirror size of 1.3 meters.
